SOCRATES AND EDUCATION
Okay,
in this discussion, we will discuss again education, to be precise we
will discuss it from the point of view of philosophy itself. Yes, philosophy,
as you know, is the mother of science, and philosophy is closely related to
education.
A
teacher educating students, for example, there must be something in his heart
to answer the question of why he should teach.
Okay,
without further ado, let's start with the first one, namely Socrates. Who
doesn't know Socrates? Philosophers must know him very well.
Okay,
Socrates is one of the most famous philosophers, partly because of his ideas
about science. Socrates was born in 470 BC – 399 BC, to Sophonicus and
Phaenarete. Through his ideas and thoughts on science, he has made him very
famous, especially in western countries. And one of his famous thoughts is his
thoughts on education.
One
of the most famous Socrates' thoughts on education is a dialectical method of
education. And this dialectical method, according to him, is a basic technique
in education.
So,
in this case, it is about the dialectical method, where students become
subjects in education, not as objects. Students are required to think, with
this, students will think critically about something, then students will test
the science, namely what they think, with that error and truth in thinking he
will know for himself if there is an error in his mind. Through these trials,
students will then improve their knowledge, so that a scientific standard is
achieved.
In
this statement, we know how important it is to make disciple the subject.
Because with the establishment of students as the center, students can think
independently and will increase the power of the brain in thinking.
Then
with the determination of the student as the center, then what are the duties
and functions of a teacher? So from here the teacher only functions as a
stimulant, so that students can, for example, start thinking or create stimuli
so that students have curiosity about something.
Then
as is happening today, many teachers impose their knowledge and ideas on
students. For example, if friends have watched a drama film from India entitled
"3 Idiots" then friends can see the advantages and disadvantages of
science, which I first call a dictatorial education system, where lecturers
provide standard knowledge, students gain knowledge from books and lecturers.
Therefore, knowledge will develop only to the extent of book standards and what
is said by lecturers. However, the antagonist of that thought is one of the 3
idiots who strongly emphasize independence in thinking, students think freely.
That is also what Socrates meant by his thoughts on education. Students are
defined as subjects of education, not as objects of education. Students are
required to think for themselves about science, find out, test their knowledge,
and then improve their knowledge to achieve scientific standards. Teachers
should not impose their ideas or thoughts on science, because that is not the
function of an educator, but only as a director, a stimulant. The teacher is
not the subject.
